Autonebula participated at the Future of Tech (FoT) Summit held in Washington, DC on April 9, 2019, featuring hundreds of leaders from government and industry. Sanjay Puri, CEO of Autonebula, was a keynote speaker.
FoT focuses on emerging technologies, and Puri spoke on the Transportation/Smart City track, offering remarks about the future of mobility and how policy can accelerate change and motion. As Vice Chairman of the Connected Vehicle Trade Association (CVTA), Puri emphasized a range of guiding strategies that must ground mobility policy moving forward. These include social and environmental equity; safety and security; economics and fiscal planning; and energy, sustainability and R&D.
Challenges are ahead. When Henry Ford started it all, he said, “There was no conscious public need of motor cars when we first made it. If I had asked people what they wanted, they would have said faster horses.” Same, today. In 2017, a J.D. Power report found that “automated driving is a new and complex concept for many consumers; they’ll have to experience it firsthand to fully understand it.”
Same, for lawmakers. According to the National League of Cities’ research, “only 6% of the U.S.’s largest cities’ transportation plans include any language on the potential effect of driverless technology on mobility.” Yet the mobility era is here. “To accelerate change, we must collaborate and be involved in the legislative process as policy is enacted,” Puri said. “The car blazed the way for the motor industry. Policy surrounding self-driving cars might just blaze the way to everywhere.”
The FoT Summit DC was livestreamed globally and to thousands of educational institutions in the USA.
