As real as Social media has become for millions across the world, India too has its list of politicians, business tycoons and Bollywood stars vying for their fans and trying to increase their likes on Facebook and their followers on Twitter etc. Indian Politicians have discovered that social media is a channel that drives Indian youth and is highly effective for bringing up social and political issues. Elections in India are right around the corner and it seems like the Politicians who used to rely on grass root politics via bill boards, big bull horns and large audience speeches are now factoring in social media in their budgets.. They are now willing to pay LACS for LIKES!
However voter turnout in India during the general election is around 60 per cent and Facebook users comprise about 10 per cent of the voting population. Moreover the likes on Facebook do not always translate to votes! If you look at how Obama effectively used social media to get the edge on Senator Clinton and Sen. McCain in 2008 it was the integration of his off-line & online campaign activities that seems to have worked well. But he did use social media to have historic turnout among the youth vote which is what every politician in India is eyeing.
For creative entrepreneurs, I see this as a tremendous opportunity if they can make these leaders popular on social media. You can charge per LIKE but just make sure that majority of your LIKEs are from India and not from places like Turkey, Ukraine etc. which is what one of the Chief Ministers of a State with an upcoming election was found to be having.
Your thoughts are welcome.
